Pruning Birch - Betula

Pruning in June

There are several different types of birch. Some are erect, whereas others are pendulous, as you can see in the picture. Birch trees do not necessarily need pruning. All birch varieties have such a strong sap flow in late winter and spring that they could bleed to death if pruned during that period, so if you want to trim your birch into a neat and more manageable shape, June is a suitable month for this.

Pruning in September and October

If your birch needs more drastic pruning, this should be done in September and October.
