JANUARY
January is when climbers, shrubs and trees are leafless and in their dormant period and one of the best gardening months for pruning any garden subjects that could cause problems during winter storms and high winds. Wisteria is a good example of a climber that can be pruned now. After flowering the previous season and given a summer pruning it produces long wispy new growths that need to be controlled by cutting back. Either summer or winter pruning and whichever plant or shrub you are pruning the first step is to remove any dead or damaged branches.

Pruning Firethorn - Pyracantha
Pruning in March
If your firethorn has become too big, you can trim it back into shape. March is the best time to do this. The aim of trimming is to keep the plant fairly compact and prevent unrestricted growth. To do this, cut any branches that have become too long back to the main branch. These branches should be divided evenly all over the plant. This frees up space for the remaining branches, which can be tied down in the resulting space.

Pruning firethorn in June, October and November
It is advisable to cut back the long branches of the firethorn from time to time. The best time to do this is in June, October and November. After pruning the firethorn will develop extra branches, forming a denser wall cover.
