JANUARY
January is when climbers, shrubs and trees are leafless and in their dormant period and one of the best gardening months for pruning any garden subjects that could cause problems during winter storms and high winds. Wisteria is a good example of a climber that can be pruned now. After flowering the previous season and given a summer pruning it produces long wispy new growths that need to be controlled by cutting back. Either summer or winter pruning and whichever plant or shrub you are pruning the first step is to remove any dead or damaged branches.

Pruning Jasmine - Philadelphus
Pruning in June-July
If your jasmine has become too tall or too wide, the protruding branches can be shortened in June or July immediately after flowering. This is also known as modelling.

Rejuvenation pruning
If your jasmine has outgrown its position or become old and untidy, rejuvenation pruning is a good option. June and July are the most suitable months for this, too.
With rejuvenation pruning, the old jasmine plant is replaced completely over a period of three to five years. This must be done methodically. You should determine in advance which branches are to be removed in which year. It is important to start pruning from the heart of the plant rather than removing the outermost branches first. Select branches divided evenly over the entire plant and cut these down to a height of about 30-40 cm, preferably just above an outward facing bud.
If you want to rejuvenate your jasmine over a period of three years, select one third of the branches for removal in the first year. In the second year, remove half of the branches remaining from the previous year, again pruning the innermost branches first. The final branches, the outermost branches, can then be removed in the third year. This replaces the entire plant in three years.
