Pruning Leyland Cypress - Cupressocyparis leylandii

Pruning in June

The Leyland cypress is one of the conifers that does not mind being pruned. The best time to prune is in June after the first growth period. If the main pruning is carried out in June, the tree has all summer to recover. It is better not to prune on a hot and/or sunny day, as the tree may suffer burn damage.

Pruning in September

The Leyland cypress can be pruned a second time in September. This should be a much lighter pruning, with only the tips of the branches being trimmed. This is also referred to as “shaving”.
