JANUARY
January is when climbers, shrubs and trees are leafless and in their dormant period and one of the best gardening months for pruning any garden subjects that could cause problems during winter storms and high winds. Wisteria is a good example of a climber that can be pruned now. After flowering the previous season and given a summer pruning it produces long wispy new growths that need to be controlled by cutting back. Either summer or winter pruning and whichever plant or shrub you are pruning the first step is to remove any dead or damaged branches.

Pruning Plum - Prunus domestica
Pruning in March
The dead wood of the plum tree can be removed directly after winter (in March). Cut right back to the live wood. This pruning will stimulate the development of the dormant buds of the plum tree. Young plum trees should also be pruned in March.

Pruning in June
If you have an adult plum tree, this can be tackled in June. The water-shoots or suckers that often develop after pruning should also be removed in June. These are easy to recognize as they grow straight upwards.
Adult plum trees really need annual maintenance pruning. New shoots that are too vigorous should be removed completely in summer, and any branches that are weak or grow horizontally can be shortened by about a quarter.
