Pruning Rhododendron

Rhododendrons are seldom pruned. However, a slight trim may occasionally be necessary. Here are some guidelines for pruning rhododendrons.

Pruning in December and January

If you want to improve the appearance of a bare rhododendron in your garden, winter is the best time to prune. Cut the bush back so far that you even remove all the leaves. This activates the development of the dormant buds on the branches. Take care never to prune in freezing weather.

Pruning in May

Old rhododendron bushes that have become (far) too big can also be cut down to the bare wood in late spring.

Pruning in June

After flowering the rhododendron can be trimmed into shape if it has become too wide or too tall. June is the perfect month for this.
