JANUARY
January is when climbers, shrubs and trees are leafless and in their dormant period and one of the best gardening months for pruning any garden subjects that could cause problems during winter storms and high winds. Wisteria is a good example of a climber that can be pruned now. After flowering the previous season and given a summer pruning it produces long wispy new growths that need to be controlled by cutting back. Either summer or winter pruning and whichever plant or shrub you are pruning the first step is to remove any dead or damaged branches.

February
Now is the time that the garden is at its most dormant period which makes it the ideal time to get on top of any pruning that you didn’t get round to in the autumn. It can always be left a week or too if the weather is against you, but the rule is that before the sap starts to rise in early spring all winter pruning jobs should be completed. Newly planted trees benefit from pruning, removing any damaged growth helps them to retain their natural shape and maintain a good and healthy tree. There is always a safety risk when pruning large trees and it would be advisable to call in the help of a professional arborist.
