May

We are often asked by gardeners ‘what needs pruning, when to prune and how to prune’. It can be quite daunting faced with a pair of secateurs and not really quite sure what to do with them. Firstly be sure of what you are doing and don’t be afraid of asking or seeking advice. A tip is to follow the May rule – If a shrub flowers before May prune immediately it has finished flowering as the flowers have grown either on old wood or on last year’s wood. If they flower after May these must be pruned during the dormant season as these flowers are grown on new growth or on this year’s growth.
